NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Emma Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) poured in a game-high and career-best 19 points, but the short-handed Carleton College women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with Gustavus Adolphus College and dropped a 69-48 contest at West Gym.
"Gustavus is a very deep, talented team," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, "not the kind of team you want to play when you are down two starters.
"I am proud of what we were able to do with our eight healthy players. We logged valuable minutes for our young players that will help in their development. We are looking forward to getting healthy and competing again on Sunday."
Missing from the Carleton (5-10, 4-8 MIAC) lineup were guards
Jill Yanai (Sr./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) and
Isabelle Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels), both of whom were injured during the Kngihts' last game. They entered the day as the team's No. 2 and No. 4 scorers this the season.
Gustavus (11-2, 9-1 MIAC) held a slim 18-17 lead after a back-and-forth opening quarter, but the visitors outscored the Knights by a 23-6 margin in the second period. Leading 41-23 at intermission, the Gusties extended their lead by posting a 19-9 scoring edge during the third quarter.
Carleton outscored the visitors 16-9 during the final stanza, but the damage had already been done as Gustavus claimed its sixth consecutive victory and 11
th win in 12 games.
Emma Henry finished the evening 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
Aiana Whitfield (Jr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) contributed 14 points and five rebounds for Carleton, while
Jasmine Choi (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) chipped in 10 points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Eleven Gustavus players got on the scoresheet, led by Syd Hauger's 15 points off the bench. Anna Sanders was the only other Gustie in double figures.
Gustavus shot 42 percent overall compared to 31 percent for Carleton. While both teams had 11 turnovers, the Gusties finished with a 16-0 edges in points off turnovers and an 11-2 margin in second-chance points.
