NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Tonny Aton (Sr./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) delivered the equalizer in the 67th minute as the Carleton College men's soccer team battled Wartburg College to a 1-1 (2 OT) draw at Bell Field.
Carleton (2-0-2) had the majority of the possession time and finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, but it was Wartburg (2-1-1) the scored first. The visitors converted off a corner kick in the 58th minute when Michael Dunn headed the ball into the lower left side of the net.
Aton was opportunistic less than 10 minutes later.
Jeremiah Lanzillo (Fy./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) sent a cross into the box that a Wartburg defender attempted to head away, however, the ball bounced off one of his teammates and instead deflected to Aton who shot over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Brennon Woody. It was Aton's ninth career goal.
Carleton had four more shots in the next 13 minutes but was unable to create a dangerous chance over the final 30 minutes of regulation and the two overtimes. Wartburg had the best opportunity to break the deadlock, but
Alexei Thomas (Jr./Northwood, United Kingdom/Merchant Taylors School) made a diving stop of a header in the 99th minute.
