NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Beck Page (Jr./Longmont, Colo./Longmont) had a game and career-high 17 points to lead all scorers as the Carleton College men's basketball team made its first eight shots and breezed to a 95-57 victory over visiting Martin Luther College.
Martin Luther (0-8) scored on the opening possession of the game, but Carleton (5-2) answered with a 24-4 run and never looked back.
Alex Gibbens (So./New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and
Matt Banovetz (So./Edina, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) accounted for the home team's first 15 points of that stretch.
Carleton led 47-27 at intermission and maintained at least a 17-point advantage the rest of the way. The Knights finished with a 22-7 edge in points off turnovers and shot 56 percent from the field while holding Martin Luther to 34 percent shooting.
This is already the third time this season that Carleton scored at least 95 points in a game, marking the first time the Knights have three such games since reaching that threshold four times during the 1996-97 campaign.
"A nice performance by our guys tonight," said Carleton head coach
Guy Kalland. "We got to our spots defensively and were able to do a nice job against their pressure on offense. It was important for us to bounce back after our game at Augsburg last weekend, and we did."
Four Carleton players finished in double figures, including Banovetz, who tallied 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals while making his first collegiate start. Gibbens was 7-of-10 from the floor and chipped in 16 points as well to match his season and career high.
Jeremy Beckler (Jr./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) reached double-digit scoring for the seventh consecutive game, finishing with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Two other Knights nearly joined the double-digit crew.
Luke Harris (Fy./Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) added nine points to go along with five rebounds plus a game and season-high six assists.
John Carragher (So./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) made his season debut, scoring nine points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Joseph Hirsch finished with 15 points and five assists to pace the visitors.
