Heads up plays by da Cunha, Bos-Shadi help Knights best Hamline 3-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Thanks to a trio of header goals—two by Marco da Cunha (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) and another by Tarek Bos-Shadi (Sr./Kankakee, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais)—the Carleton College men's soccer team scored another conference win, this one a 3-2 decision at Hamline University.

On a day which finally felt like the beginning of autumn in Minnesota with temperatures in the low 60s and rain earlier in the day, the Knights (7-3-2, 5-2-0 MIAC) were able to bounce back from a pair of deficits to notch a victory that moved them into a tie for second place in the MIAC standings.

The Pipers (2-9-2, 0-4-2 MIAC) got on the board first, appropriately on this day, thanks to a header from Nate Vogel following a beautiful feed off a set piece in the 18th minute. The Knights answered back a few minutes later when Justin Crawmer (Jr./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) made a great run up the left side and found the head of da Cunha at the back post to even the score. Hamline re-gained the lead as Logan Weller scored in the 41st minute, putting the Pipers up 2-1 at intermission despite Carleton holding possession for 70 percent of the half.

Carleton spent much of the second period looking for an answer, and the Knights found it again off the head of da Cunha, this time assisted by a beautiful crossing pass from Tonny Aton (Sr./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) in the 78th minute. Da Cunha now has a team-best six goals this season and raised his career total to 24 goals, tied for fifth in team history (see chart below).

With the score tied 2-2, Carleton had a corner kick chance in the 88th minute. Trevor Jones (Jr./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) found Bos-Shadi unmarked at the top of the box. The senior's header deflected off a defender in the box and past the keeper and into the net, Bos-Shadi's third game-winning goal this season.

Carleton enjoyed 21-4 and 9-2 advantages in shots and shots on goal, respectively in the match and finished with 65 percent of the possession.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will play its final regular season home match on Saturday, Oct. 16 when the Knights host Macalester College for a senior day matchup at 12:30 p.m.
