ROCHESTER, Minn. – A day after absorbing its first loss of the year, the Carleton College women's tennis team returned to the court—and the win column—with a neutral-site 8-1 triumph over Luther College, the regular-season champion out of the American Rivers Conference.
The Knights (3-1) cruised to a sweep of the doubles matches.
Madeline Prins (Sr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) and
Faith Yim (Jr./Orange, Calif./Villa Park) played worthy of their No. 16 national ranking with an 8-1 victory over Devon Bourget and Shelby Cook, a duo that won the A-R-C Tournament last fall.
The tandems of
Jeanny Zhang (So./Guangzhou, China/Dwight School) and
Lingyu Wei (Fy./Shanghai, China./Shanghai Weiyu High School) along with
Alise Pedersen (Fy./San Ansalmo, Calif./The Branson School) and
Alisa Makatsaria (Fy./New York, N.Y.) both posted 8-2 wins at the other two doubles slots.
Upon moving to singles, Carleton kept right on rolling.
Prins took down Bourget, who was vote the A-R-C MVP in the fall, by a convincing 6-0, 6-2 tally. Wei, Pederson, Makatasaria, and
Sydney Bell (Fy./Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes) also notched straight-set victories, dropping only 11 total games between them.
The lone victory for the Norse (10-2) came at second singles when Cook won by retirement when Zhang was unable to complete the match due to injury.
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton will take a break from competition to focus on winter term final exams. The team is slated to head to Panama for Spring Break from March 17-24. That excursion includes a March 23 match against Oberlin (Ohio) College.
