Cold shooting trips up Knights in loss at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The hopes for a late-season push toward a postseason berth took a hit for the Carleton College men's basketball team as the Knights dropped a 71-60 result at Macalester College on Saturday.

Kent Hanson led Carleton (9-13, 6-11 MIAC) with 16 points to go along with his eight rebounds and a steal. Jeremy Beckler and Alex Battist each totaled 13 points and combined for 14 boards. Meanwhile, Henry Benson contributed eight points and six rebounds but the MIAC's leader in assists was shutout in that category, partly due to the fact that the Knights shot 39 percent overall but only 29 percent in the second half.

The first time these teams met—a 68-54 Carleton triumph in early January—Macalester (7-14, 4-12 MIAC) made only four 3-pointers. This time around, the Scots drained 11 shots from beyond the arc. The hosts shot 44 percent overall and 54 percent in the second half.

The Knights fell behind early at 11-4 five minutes into the contest but after a first half that included three ties and 11 lead changes, a layup by Battist shortly before intermission allowed Carleton to take a 29-28 lead into the break.

Macalester opened the second half with a 17-4 run spanning the first seven minutes. Carleton closed to within 58-56 with 3:12 still to play, but the Scots finished the game on a 13-4 run.

Jackson Henningfield led the Scots with 17 points and seven rebounds. Eric Sathy came off the bench and hit four 3-pointers en route to a 14-point effort. Tyler McFarland chipped in with 10 points.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton hits the road for a likely must-win game against Saint Mary's University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Knights sit two games behind Gustavus Adolphus College (8-9 MIAC) for the sixth and final spot in the MIAC Playoffs.
