Cold shooting dooms Knights in loss to Hamline

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Though three members of the Carleton College women's basketball team finished in double figures, but shooting woes doomed the Knights in a 70-56 loss to visiting Hamline University.

"We did a lot of things really well, we just didn't shoot well," said Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen "There's some nights where the ball just doesn't go in the basket. We keep fighting, and we continue to fight and continue to play. But some more shots go our way, especially lay-ups, and it's a different ball game. So we'll just keep working."

Katie Chavez (Sr./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) led Carleton (5-7, 2-5 MIAC) in scoring at 15 points and provided five assists. Following closely were Samantha Cooke (Sr./St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) and Anna Hughes (Jr./Glenview, Ill./New Trier), who contributed 11 points apiece.

Carleton led 24-20 with 7:15 remaining in the second quarter, but Hamline (9-3, 4-3 MIAC) closed the opening half with a 23-8 run and never looked back. The Knights got no closer than eight points during the second half.

Hamline made 11-of-13 field goal attempts (85 percent) during the decisive second quarter and shot 49 percent overall despite going 5-of-18 (28 percent) from 3-point range. Carleton shot no better than 32 percent in any quarter and finished the game at 29 percent overall and 9-of-30 (30 percent) from beyond the arc.

Carleton pulled down a season-best 17 offensive rebounds, including seven by Cooke, who corralled 10 boards overall for her fourth career double-double.

Lydia Lecher poured in a game-high 22 points to pace Hamline, while Reilly Geistfeld added her fifth double-double (17 points, 17 rebounds) of the season.
