Knights open 2020 with 68-54 win over Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Kent Hanson (Sr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) had 18 points to lead four Knights in double figures as Carleton College defeated Macalester College 68-54 on Saturday.

"A good way to start off the New Year," said Carleton head coach Guy Kalland, "with solid defense and balance scoring. A nice, hard-fought win for the Knights."

Carleton (5-6, 2-4 MIAC) never trailed and enjoyed a 22-9 edge in points off turnovers and an 11-0 edge in fast break points. The Knights shot 45 percent overall and were 8-of-24 from 3-point range. Macalester (4-7, 1-5 MIAC) made 44 percent of its shots inside and outside the arc.

Jackson Henningfield finished with a game-high 22 points but was the lone Scots player to reach double-digit scoring.

After Macalester knotted the game at 35-35 with 15:45 remaining, Carleton answered with a 10-0 run, and the hosts maintained at least an eight-point lead the rest of the way.

Isaac Tessier (Fy./White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) and Alex Battist (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) contributed 14 points apiece to the Carleton effort, while Jeremy Beckler (Fy./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) chipped in 11 points.

Carleton point guard Henry Bensen (Sr./Roseville, Minn./Roseville) finished with five points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Battist corralled a game-high nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.

Beck Page (Fy./Longmont, Colo./Longmont) had the other six points for the Knights.
