NORTHFIELD, Minn. --
Aiana Whitfield (Fy./Richfield, Minn./Belinde-St. Margaret's) scored a game-high 15 points and
Samantha Cooke (Sr./St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) finished a rebound shy of the double-double (11 points, 9 rebounds), but the Carleton College women's basketball team tallied a season-low scoring output in a 50-39 home loss to St. Catherine University.
Despite shooting only 14 percent in the first half, the Knights (5-10, 2-8 MIAC) were able to stay in the game due to their solid defense, limiting St. Kate's (7-8, 4-6 MIAC) 28 percent shooting on the day.
The visitors led 5-4 after the first 10 minutes and took an 18-11 lead into halftime. St. Catherine extended its advantage to 38-25 with 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter before Carleton put together another late-game rally.
The Knights went on an 11-1 run, including five points by Whitfield and Cooke's first 3-pointer of the season, to make it one possession game at 39-36 with 2:37 still on the clock. The Wildcats held off the Carleton charge, however, and secured the victory with a game-ending 11-3 surge
The Knights were without top scorer
Katie Chavez (Sr./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family), who averages 16.4 points per contest, and the home team was unable to cover for the loss of offensive firepower as the team shot only 23 percent for the game, including a frigid 4-of-25 (16 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Knights were able to keep the game close due to their aggressive defense. Carleton forced 19 turnovers while limiting the Wildcats' top scorer, Danica Cambrice to just six points, nearly 11 points below her season average. Cierra Ahlf and Bree Glynn had eight points apiece to pace St. Catherine, which had five players finish with between six and eight points.
Anna Hughes (Jr./Glenville, Ill./New Trier) chipped in seven points for Carleton and matched Whitfield with a game-high four steals.
