NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College football team had the longest play of the day—a 78-yard touchdown pass from
Jonathan Singleton (Fy./San Martin, Calif./Live Oak) to
Emanual Williams (Sr./Lovelady, Texas/Lovelady)—but the Knights did not have enough big plays as St. Olaf College maintained possession of the Goat Trophy with a 36-19 home win.
This was the 100th all-time meeting between football teams from the two Northfield rivals, but it was only the sixth time that both sides were undefeated at the time (excluding the half-dozen times they met in season openers).
The Knights (2-1, 0-1 MIAC) totaled 389 yards of total offense, including a season-best 144 yards in the running game, but the Oles (3-0, 1-0 MIAC) amassed a nearly 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession and totaled 327 rushing yards on 58 carries.
The hosts led 10-0 late in the second quarter when Singleton found Williams streaking down the field for a 78-yard scoring strike, the 12th-longest pass play in recorded team history. St. Olaf responded with a touchdown drive of its own and led 17-6 at the half.
Fletcher Metz (Sr./Oconomowoc, Wis./Catholic Memorial) had two touchdown receptions in the second half to keep Carleton within striking range. The first coming midway through the third quarter when he hauled in a 24-yard toss from Singleton, the latter being a toe-tapping two-yard dart in the fourth quarter that made it a 27-19 game at the time.
Williams finished the day with seven catches for a career-high 121 receiving yards. Metz had five grabs for 47 yards and the two scores.
Singleton, making his collegiate debut, wrapped up the day 21-for-34 for 245 yards passing with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had a team-best 97 rushing yards
Jordan Embry and Khayleb Willis both carried the ball 25 times for St. Olaf and tallied 151 and 134 yards, respectively. Quarterback Lars Prestemon went 12-for-21 for 174 passing yards and two scores.
Travis Brown (Jr./St. Michael, Minn./St, Michael-Albertville) finished with 14 tackles, tied for the second-highest total of his career, in addition to a blocked field goal.
