MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Three players finished in double figures, but the Carleton College women's basketball team got off to a slow start offensively and dropped a 70-48 result at No. 22-ranked Augsburg University.
Unlike their strong performance earlier this season in building a fourth-quarter lead over No. 6-ranked St. Thomas, this time the Knights (2-5, 0-3 MIAC) found themselves unable to keep pace with another nationally-ranked opponent. Carleton missed 12-of its first 14-shots on Saturday, and Augsburg (8-1, 4-0 MIAC) never trailed in constructing a 21-5 lead after the first period.
Samantha Cooke (Sr./St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) finished with a team-best 15 points, while
Katie Chavez (Sr./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) and
Aiana Whitfield (Fy./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Jill Yanai (So./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) chipped in eight points and six assists.
Aiza Wilson led Augsburg with a 21-point effort, matching her career high. She went 7-of-12 from beyond the arc (58 percent). Camryn Speese and Jazmyn Solseth contributed 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Auggies.
Carleton shot 37 percent overall, while Augsburg made 48 percent of its field-goal attempts.
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton travels to the College of Saint Benedict for a 7 p.m. contest on Monday, Dec. 9.
