ORLANDO, Fla. –
Jeremy Beckler (Fy./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) poured in a career-best 32 points before fouling out late in regulation, but the Carleton College men's basketball team dropped a 94-88 overtime result to Hope College (Mich.) at the RDV Sportsplex Classic. The back-and-forth game featured 22 ties and 24 lead changes.
"A very competitive game for the Knights, but we came up a bit short in overtime," said Carleton head coach
Guy Kalland. "A few too many turnovers and too many offensive rebounds took a toll, but all in all, the guys again played at a high level against a talented Hope squad."
Carleton (3-5) committed 14 turnovers and surrendered 15 offensive boards to the Fighting Dutchmen (6-3), leading Hope to possess a 20-15 edge in points off turnovers and an 11-8 advantage in second-chance points.
Beckler was 9-of-18 overall and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. His point total was the highest by a Carleton rookie since Zach Johnson tallied 36 points at Bethel University on Feb. 18, 2006.
This was the second straight game in which a Knight scored more than 30 points as
Kent Hanson (Sr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) poured in a career-best 35 points on Monday evening.
Hanson finished with 24 points against Hope and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Alex Battist (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) chipped in 15 points, while
Isaac Tessier (Fy./White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) accounted for 11 points.
Hope shot 32-of-51 inside the arc (63 percent) but was only 3-of-16 (19 percent) from 3-point range for a 52 percent overall shooting performance. Carleton connected on 48 percent of its field-goal attempts, including a 10-of-25 showing from beyond the arc.
The Knights trailed by as many as eight points during the second half and still faced a 77-72 deficit with 3:15 to go in regulation. A Hope layup sandwiched between a triple by Hanson and 4-point play for Beckler leveled the score at 79-79 with 2:41 still to play.
Both sides missed opportunities to win the game at the free-throw line as Hope went 3-of-7 while Carleton was 3-of-6 over the last two minutes. Hanson put Carleton in front with two free throws with 29 seconds remaining, but Clavin Hackert split his free throws with 0:02 on the clock to send the game into overtime.
After Beckler and Battist both fouled out late in the second half, Carleton was outscored 12-6 during overtime.
Preston Granger was credited with 32 points for the Flying Dutchmen, while Sam Vree (career-high 14 points), Hackert (13), and Clayton Dykhouse (10) also finished in double figures.
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton is right back on the same floor at the RDV Sportsplex to face Finlandia University at 6 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Dec. 19.
