NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's basketball team dominated in posting an 84-33 triumph over visiting Crown College on Saturday evening. This 51-point win marks the third-largest margin victory in recorded team history.
Katie Chavez's (Sr./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) 25-point effort led four Knights in double figures.
Carleton (2-1) opened the game with a 14-0 run, led 39-14 at halftime, and slowly extended its lead throughout the second half. The Knights tried to spread their playing time out as 8-of the-9 healthy players on the roster saw between 18-27 minutes of court time.
"I thought it was a good team win where we focused well throughout the contest," noted head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "We know the competition only gets toughter from here on out, so we needed to be deliberate in our execution and work towards improvement in every facet of the game."
Chavez went 8-of-10 from the field as she scored 25 points from her guard position. She also gathered a game-high seven rebounds and contributed four assists with four steals. Interestingly, Chavez scored the first points of every quarter, opening the each of the final three periods with one of her three 3-pointers. With her second big game of the week, Chavez jumped to the top of the MIAC's individual scoring leaderboard as she is averaging 21.7 points per game so far this season.
Samantha Cooke (Sr./St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) scored 18 points, had two blocks, and grabbed five rebounds.
Jill Yanai (So./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Anna Hughes (Jr./Glenview, Ill./New Trier) was the other Knight in double figures, scoring 11 as she went 3-of-6 from three-point range.
The Knights registered 17 steals and turned the Storm's 26 turnovers into 29 points. The Knights also had an edge on the Storm with 38-8 points scored in the paint

Kicking off the first quarter in a 14-0 point run, the Knights held off the Storm from scoring until there was but 4:37 left in the period. Carleton maintained their early lead, ending the quarter 15 points ahead of the visitors at 21-6.
In the second period, Carleton expanded its lead to as many as 28 points. The Knights held Crown to a 18 percent shooting during the first half. Meanwhile, Chavez, Cooke, and Yanai were each already in double figures by the break as the trio accounted for 34 of Carleton's 39 first-half points.
Carleton closed the third quarter on a 12-0 run before Chavez and
Asha Bozicevich (Jr./Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins) drained 3-pointers to begin the final period.
The Knights shot 53 percent overall, including 43 percent from three-point range, while holding the Storm to a 21 percent field-goal rate overall.
Dominique Urbina scored 11 points to pace Crown, with Stevey De La Ossa adding seven points.
